Planetarium Planisphere

A Planisphere is simple star chart - a rotating disk within a cover. With a planisphere one can determine which stars and constellations are visible at any time, on any date.  Planispheres are designed for a specific latitude - a planisphere designed for the UK is useless in South Africa.

A planisphere is a great tool for getting to know the stars from town, finding less-prominent constellations when you are out in the bush, and planning your observing session at the telescope.

  • double-sided* planisphere
  • water resistant cardboard
  • designed for 28° South latitude (mid South Africa)
  • clear, uncluttered design
  • selection of major constellations, with figures
  • major stars, galaxies, nebulae, and clusters
  • constellation figures "disappear" under red light and stars "shine" brighter
  • size: 20 x 22cm

* a "double-sided" planisphere splits the sky into two: one half on the "looking north" side, one on the "looking south" side.  These planispheres show a less-distorted view of the sky.
